In
village far on Afric’s soil,
All
men and chimps do work and toil:
They
climbed the trees and plucked the fruits
And
sought the herbs with potent roots.
They
chattered low and chattered strong,
For
life was merry then and long.

Cute
lazing lure of lunar lore,
Hampered
no hearts with hedges yore.
Sweet
toiling time for climbing trees,
Did
linger long in soft cool breeze.
For
men were tired of the croon.
“My
friends we live you here and now,
We go
way down the soil to plough,
This
lazing time at idle spray,
Will
make us sheep to bleat and bray”
The
men came down to till the earth,
But
left the chimps in their trees’ mirth.
In
village far in Afric’s time,
Fair
chimps still swing in jolly clime.
While
humans toil the soil for food,
The
chimps jeer them with riling rude
